Moxibustion and IBS

Moxibustion is a therapy utilized by acupuncturists where a dried cone of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is burned on different acupuncture points. Cones are removed once the patient begins to feel a comfortable warming sensation. By warming areas of the body practitioners are able to stimulate circulation through the meridians and promote a smoother flow of qi and blood. There are many therapeutic uses for moxibustion. At Roots Acupuncture and Healing we utilize moxibustion for patients with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, fatigue, infertility, decreased libido and more. A clinical trial published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology showed that the use of moxibustion for patients suffering from inflammatory bowel syndrome is quite effective. After a course of treatment patients in this study reported a decrease in abdominal pain and distention as well as an increase in quality of life factors.
